Summary

A practical guide to taking control of your mental health for today, tomorrow, and the days after, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author and beloved entertainer。

'There's a moment at the end of every day, where the world falls away and you are left alone with your thoughts。 A reckoning, when the things you have been pushing to the background, come forward and demand your attention。'

Written by Daniel Howell, in consultation with a qualified psychologist, in an entertaining and personal way from the perspective of someone who has been through it all--this no-nonsense book gives you the tools to understand your mind so you can be in control and really live。 Created with exclusive audio features, it is split into three chapters for each stage of the journey:

This Night - how to get through your toughest moments and be prepared to face anything。 Tomorrow - small steps to change your thoughts and actions with a big impact on your life。 The Days After - help to look after yourself in the long term and not just survive, but thrive。

You will laugh and learn--but most of all, this book will assure you that even in your darkest times, there is always hope。

You will get through this night。

I'll preface this review by saying I'm a fan of Dan's and have been for many years。 But I'm also someone who loves a good non-fiction, personal growth book, so。。。 This was always going to be right up my alley。You Will Get Through This Night is the perfect first stepping stone into understanding how our mental health can impact us, our behavior, and the way we perceive and react to the world around us。 It boils down what can otherwise be a really complicated topic into the "why?" and "what can I I'll preface this review by saying I'm a fan of Dan's and have been for many years。 But I'm also someone who loves a good non-fiction, personal growth book, so。。。 This was always going to be right up my alley。You Will Get Through This Night is the perfect first stepping stone into understanding how our mental health can impact us, our behavior, and the way we perceive and react to the world around us。 It boils down what can otherwise be a really complicated topic into the "why?" and "what can I do about it?" As such, I think this is a good book for anyone to have on hand, whether what they're dealing with is as small as "my roommate is being annoying" or as big as "I can't bring myself to get out of bed today。"What this book is NOT。。。 is a memoir。 Anyone going into this book expecting lurid details about Dan isn't going to get them。 In the intro, Dan gives us his story, his struggles, and why he's writing this book (and yes some of it is difficult and dark - so that's worth keeping in mind) and then the rest of the book? That's FOR and ABOUT the reader。 Throughout, he injects anecdotes on his own mental health and similar issues he may have faced and he also sprinkles in a lot of wonderful humor that keeps what would otherwise be a very serious topic from becoming too heavy。 That's what makes this a good read and a wonderful resource - especially for anyone who has previously struggled to accept that they might be dealing with mental health challenges of their own。 It's not a life story, but a relatable way to understand what's happening in your brain。All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I'm sure I'll be coming back to it now and then to pick up tips applicable to where I'm at。 I definitely recommend it as a first step to get to know you and your brain! 。。。more

Last night I sat down and read this book in just under four hours。 I was able to get it a week early, which I am extremely grateful for, and I have many thoughts。As someone who is a follower and supporter of Dan's content, I will admit that in many ways this book was not what I was expecting。 If you're familiar with him, you'll have more experience with his particular brand of humor, but this book is aimed for much more general audiences。 I admire the way he was able to succinctly communicate al Last night I sat down and read this book in just under four hours。 I was able to get it a week early, which I am extremely grateful for, and I have many thoughts。As someone who is a follower and supporter of Dan's content, I will admit that in many ways this book was not what I was expecting。 If you're familiar with him, you'll have more experience with his particular brand of humor, but this book is aimed for much more general audiences。 I admire the way he was able to succinctly communicate all this information, he really meant it when he said he it was an accessible guide to mental health。There were times I genuinely was like oh shit。 This just explained a whole lot about me as a person。 It made me feel seen in a way both Daniel and Depression and Basically I'm Gay, two of his Youtube videos, did, but you can also tell that unlike those videos, this is aimed towards a much larger audience。 I think that's a good thing, that it has such a large target audience, because it really presents mental health in a much more accessible manner。In terms of critiques: I feel that while the therapy chapter was useful, it really didn't say much about how inaccessible therapy is to so many people and how even when it's technically "free" it's not always good quality。 There were a few exercises in the book that were maybe not as helpful to people with bad living situations, bad family members, etc。, but there was enough of a variety of advice that in the end I feel as though most people could get something out of this。I've compiled a list of trigger warnings per chapter as well as shortcuts for the different breathing exercises / anxiety reducing exercises:https://docs。google。com/document/d/1O。。。 。。。more

I was having a deeply frustrating day (several beaurocratic and diagnostic issues with my ~rare blood disease~ ) when I received my copy of “You Will Get Through This Night” in the mail a little earlier than expected— naturally I had to binge it all in 9hrs。。。! Point is, in so many ways it was exactly what I needed。 It was paced wonderfully and designed so thoughtfully。 It was raw and careful and intentional。 Full of Dan-isms。 And I loved it very much :’)

Amazing, astonishing and absolutely necessary for the world we live in。 Daniel Howell tackles mental health with humour, vigor and an overwhelming sense of connectedness。 We are not alone。 Keep this book on your nightstand。 Carry it in your bag。 It is the guide we all need to understand our own brains and the journey they take us on。 I will be going back to it for advice and comfort。 Thank you Dan

I absolutely cannot wait for this book! So proud of Dan for opening up about a topic that is too often considered taboo。 It’s the book I know a lot of people will benefit from, including myself。 Only 8 months to go ❤️
